If you’re exploring what Virginia has to offer, here are some recommended microbreweries and wineries to find a good beer on tap or a glass of homegrown wine. Blue Mountain Brewery Right by the Appalachian Blue RIdge Mountain in Afton is Blue Mountain Brewery, whom prides in being a farmhouse brewery that even grows their own hops. They grow their hops on two hop yards in Afton and one in Arrington. These hop yards grow as many as 1,000 Cascade variety hops that is incorporated into their strong pale ale, seasonal and harvest beers. Their doors opened in 2007 as the first brewery of Nelson County. They have grown in production to package all their beers onsite at their Barrel House location in Arrington. Their production will be about 10,000 barrels this year. Their Afton brewery is also a restaurant that serves up specials on Taco Tuesday and a brunch with live music on Saturday afternoons. They also offer one of the country’s top-rated beer club memberships. Recommendations: Dark Hollow Artisanal Ale (American Double / Imperial Stout) Full Nelson Virginia Pale Ale (American Pale Ale (APA)) Evil 8° Belgian-Style Dubbel Ale (Dubbel – seasonal) Wild Wolf Brewing Company Along came a big brewy wolf that found its home as Wild Wolf Brewing Company in Nellysford, opening its doors in 2011. The brewery is a restored 100-year old schoolhouse and is located close to the Brew Ridge Trail. In addition to offering over a dozen brewery-crafted beers on tap, they also have a hopyard, a dog-friendly outdoor beer garden, scenic mountain views with a koi pond, courses to teach beer making with homebrew kit supplies, and fountain and a year-round outdoor pavilion. Their restaurant also offers delicious farm-to-table dishes from nearby local farms, ranging from BBQ to baked goods. Recommendations: Primal Instinct (American IPA) Black Wolf IBA (American Black Ale) American Stout (American Stout) Apocalypse Ale Works The apocalypse here signifies the end of bad beer at Apocalypse Ale Works, located at Forest, VA. What use to be the Forest Volunteer Fire Department now is the home of Apocalypse’s tasting room and production room for craft brews. Come visit them on “Temptation Thursdays,” where they experiment with their beers through a Randall and big beer tower dispenser to offer some flavor-infused brews, along with Happy Hour specials. Recommendations: Hoppocalypse (American Amber / Red Ale) Glorious Dead ESB (Extra Special / Strong Bitter (ESB)) 6th Seal Chocolate Stout (American Stout) Barren Ridge Vineyards With over 14-award winning wines under their belt and a pet-friendly patio that boasts beautiful views of their vineyards, Barren Ridge Winery makes a relaxing and enjoyable trip. Their century-old apple barn is converted to house a tasting room, with the original structures still reflecting an old farmhouse charm, along with a fireplace to make for a cozy evening. Patrons are welcome to go on daily vineyard tours seven days a week. Recommendations (as available): 2013 Merlot 2014 Riesling Touriga Veritas Winery & Vineyard Veritas Winery has over 50 acres of vineyards in Afton, VA, which was originally a horse and cattle farm. Their name derives from Pliny the Elder, a Romanian philosopher, which quoted “In Vinos Veritas,” translating to “In wine there is truth.” The family-owned vineyard and winery has lush panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They also host various summer concert events throughout the summer called Starry Nights, and welcome picnic blankets to be laid out during the concert. Many of the lessons start off in the James River and take you through different areas from there. Fredericksburg SUP is a wonderful place to take the plunge and explore paddle boarding in northern Virginia. The company offers lessons and guided tours, as well as equipment rentals to those who either wish to learn or who are already experienced.
